Keywords 101

One of the fundamental tasks for creating a website that attracts traffic from Google and the common search engines is selecting useful and descriptive keywords for your effort. A good term or phrase that accurately describes your product or service or presents the “need” your company serves is essential to building your website into a sales and marketing tool.

At start up, most enterprises don’t invest time in researching what keywords would work for the organization. That or the process is simply not accomplished. As keywords help search engines to understand the content of your page though, ignoring keyword selection may mean turning away visitors and customers from your business website.

Normally, keyword listing is contained within the part of the web page that users hardly ever see. The “meta-tags” in which the keywords live generally are only visible to readers who view the page source from their browser window.

More importantly though, keywords describe your business, the web page and should be used throughout the page. Keyword phrases that appear frequently provide confirmation to Google and others that the page is in fact about what the keywords describe.

Once useful keywords and terms are identified, they should be installed within the page title, headlines and placed wherever reasonably possible throughout the text of the page. Be careful about overusing keywords in the text though. This practice can be considered ‘keyword stuffing’ which is frowned upon by most search engines. The search engines can then devalue or remove the page from their index, so use keyword phrases appropriately within the page text.

How exactly does one go about selecting appropriate keyword phrases then? Google provides a tool within its Adwords system that is quite useful for sorting out possible keywords. The Adwords tool is generally available for free provided one sets up an Adwords account. Within these tools is a feature that allows the user to simply direct the tool to the constructed page and the system will generate a list of possible keywords for you. While this is highly useful for a pre-constructed page, there are a few pitfalls.

Among the pitfalls are keywords that are highly competitive. In other words, a new website should avoid terms for which a high number of competitors are seeking high ranking or paying a great deal of money for on their Adwords system. The Adwords keyword tool will display which possible search terms or keyword phrases are highly competitive and expensive. These search terms will generally require a longer period of time to produce results for – especially for new business start up pages.

When you believe you may have discovered a good keyword phrase, run a Google search. If major corporate websites appear at the top of the results page, reconsider your choice. If your company page would be up against someone like Bank of America for your keyword term, rest assured that they will ruthlessly compete against anyone using that term – which decreases your opportunity to rank well. (There is a way to compete with the big guys just not head-to-head using their keywords. See the note on including a geographic term below.)

Choosing effective keywords and phrases then is an art form that identifies a creative and descriptive phrase that describes your page as well as your business. The other part of the art is to identify one of these terms that generates traffic but has fewer big companies competing for it. A good and efficient keyword phrase then is one that has a good amount of internet traffic but isn’t heavily competed for.

A quick note is appropriate here about traffic number that the Google Adwords tool displays. These are not exact counts, but are useful for providing a relative measure of the level of search activity that a keyword term receives.

A creative streak in keyword selection is also quite helpful. Companies doing business within a certain town or geographic area can use the name of that area within the keyword phrase. Setting one’s business page apart from others by using a geographic term (such as “Refrigerators in Dallas” is much more useful than simply searching for “Refrigerators”). Internet users with an immediate need frequently include a geographic name within their search.

Be flexible in selecting keywords. Some that seem to look good may have to be abandoned if they produce traffic and not actual sales. Consumer behavior is an odd game for which there are no set rules. Error, trial and error frequently turns out to be a highly successful methodology for the small or start up business to select keywords.

Effective Internet Marketing: 6 Important Tips You Need To Know

Currently one of the most profitable ways to make money online is affiliate marketing using an effective internet marketing strategy. And if you do it correctly, you will increase sales in your internet business. Everyday, more and more people are getting online and searching for ways to solve their problems. You may be wondering just how you are supposed to get into the game. The six key ideas below will offer you the best internet marketing help.

1. Carefully Research Your Keywords

Your goal for effective internet marketing campaigns is to rank well in the search engine results. To do this, long tail keywords are king. When you use these longer keyword phrases, you greatly increase your chances to rank. You may be wondering why this is? You are effectively cutting out a large chunk of the general competition by focusing on the consumers needs and you are more likely to attract customers who are ready to buy your product today.

Long tail keywords are actually several words together and the intention is to focus on a small niche audience. Narrowing your focus targets specific users looking for a specific item or service. In the end, this means better quality traffic to your website and you are not in competition with the established giants of the online world.

The idea is to find keyword phrases that are unique or specific and targeted. For example, try this. Go to the free WordTracker Keyword Tool – http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com

Type “internet marketing” (quotes not included) and press Hit Me

Did you see what came up? the phrase “Internet marketing” returned over 1,800 searches every day. While that may sound great, it is a very competitive field and not at all targeted.

Now, try another phrase. Plug in “internet marketing optimization” and you will see it does not have 1800 per day but rather 90 searches. This phrase is a more targeted, long-tail keyword and suggests people are searching for help with their website and need optimization. Therefore, if you are searching for a good keyword to use and considering effective internet marketing tactics, “internet marketing optimization” is the winner.

2. Web 2.0 – Social Networking

No, Microsoft did not throw another program out there; web 2.0 symbolizes the move on the World Wide Web to shared creative endeavors and knowledge. Multimedia websites, social bookmarking, wikis and blogs are all a part of social networking and therefore a piece of web 2.0. Using this type of site to target your customers is a smart move as there are extreme number of people using these avenues daily.

So, your goal in this process many fold. First, create a blog around your keyword, “internet marketing help”. Now load it up with relevant information and specific unique content and do your best to help them solve their problem. Next, set up your own Squidoo lens on the subject matter and also have several social networking accounts such as Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. Can you see where this is going?

3. Site Promotion – SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

So far, we’ve talked about how effective internet marketing and search engine optimization work together. SEO is a concept online and affiliate marketers use to increase their ranking with the search engine results. Strategic SEO will bring you to the top of the pile. The truth of the matter is the higher up you are on Google, the more you will be found by your customers. When is the last time you went beyond the third page of results when you were using Google? Never would be my guess!

Something that bears repeating is that unique content and quality links pointing to your site are crucial to your success. SEO is a very involved and a sometimes complicated endeavor and you may find your head spinning at times. Nevertheless, quality links and unique content must be at the top of your internet-marketing list.

The majority of marketers do not take the time to create a unique article and most of the time they just copy somebody’s articles. Do not take this approach whatever you do! At the very least, you should look at finding original PLR articles with rich content for your site. Google is a bit persnickety about content that looks old and used up. Google prefers fresh stuff. The biggest problem with writing your own articles up has been the immense amount of time it takes to write and then submit them individually to the directories.

4. Sell An Affiliate Product Or Your Own

You need to consider whether it is better to sell your own product or an affiliate product. The deciding vote on this ordeal will be in the size of the available market. Is your niche market big enough? You can go to WordTracker for help in finding out. For instance, say, your product is clay teapots. Surely, there is a market for these. Plug this keyword phrase into the keyword research tool and what do you find? A single search per day is all.

However, look closer and check out the search results as there are “clay flower pots” that have an impressive 68 searches per day. Moreover, you may notice that many are also looking to find “hangers for clay pots”.

This means it is time to adjust your effective internet marketing campaign and focus on “clay flower pots” or even their hangers. Now you can make clay flower pots and hangars at home and sell them online or you can search for an affiliate program at Commission Junction or Amazon and sell affiliate products instead. There are many ways you can find the right market that will work for your plan.

5. Get More Traffic And Internet Marketing

It is important to increase the traffic to your site or product page when you are trying to get more business online. You can use the above techniques to increase your web traffic to your site. Using desirable keywords, altering keywords and phrases and advertising through your social network can all be very helpful.

There is a great deal of information on this topic as and as we move along, I promise to visit the subject again in more detail.

6. Always – Put Your Customer First

Return business is the lifeblood of any company, and a helpful company is remembered by customers. Consumers prefer to do business with a helpful and intuitive online business. Go the extra mile to help them and your customers will remember! You! If they cannot trust you, they will shop elsewhere. Solving your customer’s immediate problem should be another key focus of your effective internet marketing strategy.

Many summers ago while lounging by a beautiful lake, I listened to Earl Nightingale on cassette, and I am reminded of his sage advice. “Everything in the world we want to do or get done, we must do with and through people.” Or this: “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” For something to be worthy, in my mind, we must be first honest with others and ourselves. For your provocative questions, it is my hope that you have found this article to be informative and of some help. It is impossible to discuss every effective internet marketing technique in one article. But if you will put these few internet-marketing help topics to good use, you will have a more effective and successful internet business.

If Your Working on Optimizing Your Site You Probably Got Scammed

I love the way all these people selling search engine optimization techniques and tools act like you have to have all this training to put your site at the top of the search engines. I taught myself how to do it in a matter of a few months, with some very simple techniques. I have all kinds of websites on the first page of Google for competitive keywords only because I know how to do it.

I have to be able to make you understand that everyone selling these SEO products probably does know what they are doing, however they are really internet marketers. Nobody who has figured out SEO is not doing some type of internet marketing. The key to successful internet marketing is repeat sales, so each of these people selling these courses has you on the hook to spend more and more money even if they don’t teach you a thing.

Let me tell you how I figured this out. I had a friend who let me borrow a very good product written by Brad Fallon which went through very detailed information on SEO. I was so determined to learn I took comprehensive notes. After I was done learning I decided that this time I would succeed in figuring out SEO regardless of what I had to do.

The course disappointed me, however. Though it was presented well, it was the same old stuff I had read on forums and been doing for years. It doesn’t work. There is no magic code you can put in your page, as a matter of fact that doesn’t really even matter. There is no keyword density that is special, and reciprocal linking didn’t work I had been doing that for 4 years.

My determintation did not give up, however, I found a way to build one way links right to my website quickly and easily. I was absolutley astonished upon this discovery which only came to me because I was unwilling to give up. Now I can not only put my sites at the top of search engines, I easily raise my Google PR which everyone wants to do. The keys are to get a lot of backlinks and let the search engines find you.
